Peeling according to your skin: AHA, BHA, and PHA guide
- 2 min reading time
Peeling by your skin type: discover the differences between AHA, BHA, PHA, and gommage to choose the right exfoliant for radiance, pores, oiliness, or sensitivity.
Choosing the right peel for your skin doesn't have to be complicated. The right exfoliant can help improve the appearance of texture, dullness, visible pores, or dead skin cell buildup. The key is to identify what your skin needs and start gradually.
In cosmetics, there are different types of exfoliation. AHA, BHA, and PHA acids work differently, while gommage offers a softer, more sensory alternative. You don't need to use them all: a single product well-integrated into your routine is usually enough.
AHA: for luminosity and uneven texture
AHAs, such as glycolic acid and lactic acid, primarily work on the skin's surface. They are a good option if you are looking to improve luminosity, smooth uneven texture, or address the appearance of spots. They tend to fit best into normal to dry skin routines, always respecting the frequency indicated by each product.
BHA: for pores, shine, and oily skin
The best-known BHA is salicylic acid. Being oil-soluble, it is commonly used in products aimed at clogged pores, blackheads, and excess sebum. If your priority is to reduce shine and maintain a feeling of cleanliness in the T-zone, a BHA may be the most suitable option.
PHA: for sensitive skin or beginners
PHAs are milder exfoliating acids. They are an interesting alternative if you have sensitive skin, if you easily experience irritation, or if you are going to start using chemical exfoliants. Start infrequently and observe how your skin responds before increasing use.
Gommage: gentle and visual exfoliation
Gommage gel forms small rolls when massaged onto dry or slightly damp skin. It offers a gentle exfoliating experience and is practical for those who prefer a physical texture without using concentrated acids.
How to use a peel according to your skin type
- Luminosity, spots, or texture: AHA.
- Pores, oil, or blackheads: BHA.
- Sensitive skin or first exfoliation: PHA or gommage.
Introduce the peel according to your skin type once or twice a week and avoid combining several intense exfoliants during the same routine. Afterward, apply moisturizer and use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen every morning. Chemical exfoliation can temporarily increase sensitivity to UV radiation. [278][996]
